Semtech Announces Two Core-Voltage Controllers for Mobile Intel Pentium 4 Processor Designs
New controllers provide dual phase and single phase operation with
support for Intel standards;
integrated drivers extend board space savings
CAMARILLO, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Aug. 12, 2004—
Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq:SMTC), a leading supplier of analog and
mixed-signal semiconductors for communications, portable devices,
computers, and industrial equipment, today announced availability of
the SC450 and SC451 power supply controllers for use in notebook PCs
based on the latest Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processors.
Both devices comply with Intel mobile PC standards aimed at
extending battery life, including Intel's Mobile Voltage Positioning
(IMVP-IV(TM) and IMVP-IV+(TM)) requirements, which increase battery
life by reducing the voltage at the processor when it is heavily
loaded. Both controllers also support processor speed scaling built
into Intel's SpeedStep(R) processors. The SC450 controller operates
from either 3.3V or 5V; the SC451 device operates from 5V.
Both the SC450, dual-phase hysteretic pulse-width modulating (PWM)
Vcore controller, and the SC451, single-phase Vcore controller,
integrate MOSFET drivers on-chip. This integration saves critical
board space needed by today's smaller form factors. Both devices
support Intel's requirement for a maximum amount of time allowed for
the device to go from the "deeper sleep" mode (C4E) to low-frequency
mode (LFM). The 6-bit DAC on both devices is slew rate limited to
minimize transient currents and audible noise.
Another advantage of the SC450 and SC451 is backward compatibility
with the widely used Semtech SC1476 and SC1479, dual phase and single
phase IMVP-IV controllers. Both new devices continue to incorporate an
automatic power save mode where the controllers detect reverse current
through the inductor (under light load conditions) shutting off the
low-side FET to preserve battery life.
"Semtech continues to expand its core voltage regulator offerings
to support our customers as they adopt new technology. For customers
designing systems at 25 amps or below, using a single phase solution
may be the best and most space saving option. For customers designing
for more current, a dual phase solution is required," said Eddie Yeow,
Vice President of Semtech's Portable Products Group. "The availability
of the pin-compatible upgrades from our SC1476 and SC1479 makes it
easy for customers who design and sell multiple platforms to upgrade
their controllers as they adopt Intel's latest technology and their
specifications change."
